Social media is getting harder and harder to ignore in the business world. Businesses had a similar attitude to the internet 10 years ago. Many thought they would just ignore it or maybe it was a fad. Well, the internet didn’t go quietly away into the night and neither will social media. Social media actually has a more powerful focus than the internet as a whole for business. The internet is a great tool for finding information but that alone is too broad a feature for businesses. On the other hand social media allows content to get straight to consumers to influence them. Influencing the consumer and creating loyalty is a very practical goal for every business. Businesses just aren’t getting it, they have become laxy with one way mass marketing.

Business isn’t as unpredictable and difficult if you just pay attention to trends and patterns.┬áBusinesses who got in early on the internet had many advantages compared to those who finally came on board after it was so obvious that they should do something. You simply have to follow the movement of information which leads the movement of money. The internet is just getting better everyday at reaching and influencing people. It is the global marketplace and yet at the same time it is like the wild west when it comes to opportunity. Money used to be a major barrier of entry for business success. Buying equipment, hiring people, leasing space, and a ton of other overhead costs kept the big guys in power and put pressure on the little guys. With social media the tables are turned and the little guy has a huge advantage. Relationships are more memorable than marketing in an age where ignoring marketing is the norm.

The big guys are trying to figure it out and throwing money at it, but the little guy has some huge advantages online. Social media for small businesses is more manageable and can have a huge impact. For big businesses managing a customer base in the millions can make it hard to engage on a personal level. Engagement is the “influence machine” and social media is the ultimate tool. For the first time, brands can actually create real relationships with their customers. The traditional marketing methods of manipulating your thoughts and emotions towards their brands through advertising strategies is becoming less effective.
