Linkedin Stats and Uses Infographic

For serious networking, it may be hard to find a social platform that delivers more then Linkedin. Many people pass over Linked in because they haven’t looked under the hood enough to see what you can really do or how big it is. I remember when it first came out I was an early adopter and it fit into one of those categories of sites I made a profile on and then never really came back to for a long time. Well, Linkedin is all grown up now and I have come back to to expand my use of it in my social media outlets. Here are two key things you may not realize about Linkedin.

1 – Linkedin lets you get to know a person in a way that normal profile simply don’t. One example here is work history. Most social media profiles are generic or shallow at best. Linkedin lets you see where a person has worked, skills they may list, and recommendations they have been given. Just the job history and ability to look up that company can tell you a lot of information on the types of work they have done and the environments they have been used to. This is great for both professional connections, networking, and recruiting. If you compare a regular resume that is tailored to the job they are looking to get, you won’t see things in their right perspective. Linkedin lets you get a much more accurate feel for their experience both professional and personal.

2 – Networking by topic and category is huge. To be able to hangout with a group of dentists, or connect with people who are part of a specific group or profession is powerful. If you go to a networking event or professional event you don’t know exactly who everyone is or their background. Linkedin is like networking 2.0. You can see where they worked, who they are connected to that you may know, and learn about the companies they have worked for all before joining a group and getting to know them. This helps you make stronger connections and build better relationships.

It is time to take a second look at Linkedin and use it to strengthen relationships and build key new relationships. If you want to connect on Linkedin with me click here and send me an invite.

The groups are the valuable part of LinkedIn for me and they represent a tremendous opportunity to interact with B2B people. There was some research recently showing that for B2B marketing, LinkedIn was 4 times as effective as Twitter, and 8 times as effective as Facebook.

On an unrelated topic, does anyone else find infographics a bit passe now? They seem to be so darn long at the moment and I seldom read them. When they first came out their appeal was that they broke down heavy data into more digestible chunks. Now they’re flooded with data, which kinda defeats the purpose imo.

Anyway, bit of an off topic grumble :)

Adi, I agree with the groups being the powerful part of Linkedin though there are so many other things people look past. As far as the Infogrphics, I have seen them done well and not so well. I think the visual data medium is still exceptional. The key is if you can use the date to tell a story not just display stats and facts. This is why I interpret it at the bottom. I also think if done right it can help people put data in perspective and remember it better.

    Informative… That’s why it calls ” Info + Graphic” ;)

Thanks for elaborating uses of it, Ross :) I’ve never found LinkedIn impressive or work out for me over other networks. Never give a second look either. Actually, I could’t see how connections and relationships were important there. However thanks for reminding me with this post to take a look at it ;)

    Cheers…

Your welcome Mayura, nice blog by the way, Linkedin is worth a second look, like most networks the more you understand it and use it, the more value it has.
