Are You Getting Caught up in the Social Media Avalanche?
It never ceases to amaze me when I see information on the size and scope of social media. It is like an avalanche because it has been building and growing at such a rapid pace that before you know it you are caught up in it and can’t seem to get out of it. How many people have said they were not going to use Facebook only to show up a week later saying they are back. As life gets busier social media just allows us to connect in a way the works for our busy schedule. Without social media many relationships would just suffer as the pressures of work and family surround us daily.
Some of the highlights of this infographic are the relative size of Facebook. Though I think that their growth has cooled and will continue to cool as people become distracted with new offerings. Facebook is a lot like the iPhone was before Androids came out. They may think they couldn’t be knocked off and that they dominated the market, but I can tell you that nothing lasts forever and on the web forever can change in a nanosecond. I also like the section on content being loaded and shared. For many people these numbers are not tangible, but the rate and velocity of information entering the stream changes the face of the internet. We are used to things staying the same and this is why site wide changes to major platforms always causes an uproar because we want thing to stay the same. The internet just doesn’t work that way and the companies who own the platforms aren’t changing it for you, they are changing things to stay competitive for fear they will lose relevance and competitive advantage.
Finally we get to the demographics. I think this has extra significance simply because the amount of people using social media is so large that any small trend is actually huge. Such as women being the highest percentage of users. Knowing this can have real impacts for businesses trying to join social media. Their branding may not be woman friendly and they may wonder why they are not getting anywhere in social media. There are tons of interesting facts about social media, check out this cool video for more social media facts.
